Infiniti to exit Europe, Q30 and QX30 United Kingdom production cancelled

It's the second blow within weeks for the U.K.'s biggest auto plant, after Nissan abandoned a plan to make the X-Trail sport utility vehicle there, citing uncertainty over Brexit as a factor. Five new models will also be introduced to the Chinese market over the next five years. The two vehicle models are distributed globally but they are only produced in Sunderland.

'The commercial reality for Infiniti in Western Europe is that there is simply no visibility of a viable and sustainable business either now or in the years to come.

By way of comparison, Lexus managed 47,170 sales across Europe in 2018, which trailed Alfa Romeo (83,438), Jaguar (84,311), Land Rover (150,283), and Volvo (319,048) by a significant margin.

Infiniti Motor Co, the luxury division of Japanese automaker Nissan, says it's withdrawing from western Europe - offering another blow to carmakers in the United Kingdom bracing for Britain's departure from the European Union.

As part of the plan, INFINITI will electrify its portfolio from 2021 onward, discontinue diesel offerings and focus its resources on its biggest opportunities. They are consulting with the representatives of its employees to determine appropriate support as they opportunities for the transition. It says its vision is "to become a top challenger brand in the premium segment".

The plans will, according to Infiniti, have no impact on its operations in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Asia, however.

All but Belfast's Mervyn Stewart Infiniti site are now operated by the Infiniti Retail Group. However, dealerships will remain open until a "tailored transition plan is put in place".
