Hart, who stepped down as the host of the 2019 Academy Awards in December after a string of homophobic tweets from his account were dug up, has had a unusual go of it over the past several weeks.

DeGeneres said she called the Academy too because she really wanted to see Hart host.

But Nick Levine, a United Kingdom journalist who writes about pop culture and LGBTQ issues, told the BBC: "Like Ellen DeGeneres, I believe in forgiveness and second chances, but I also believe those things need to be earned". I know that I've taken the ten years to put my apology to work. "I'm in a completely different space in my life".

Hart repeated his apology, but then criticised the people who had dug out his old offensive tweets. "Because that was wrong".

"It's tough for me because it was an attack, a malicious attack on my character, to end me", Hart says in the interview which airs today.

DeGeneres also tweeted: "I believe in forgiveness".

Sources close to Oscar gatekeepers the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said that in the hours following release of the "Ellen" clips, the group was open to Hart returning as host if he signaled he wanted the gig and also made a honest demonstration of contrition.

In the next segment, Ellen said that she wants him to host the Oscars and that she even called a representative of the Academy to try to get him his hosting gig back.

Controversy continues to hound Kevin Hart after previous homophobic comments were drudged up, but it might not hurt one of his immediate job prospects.

None of that means, however, that Hart has no ambitions to stand upon the Oscars stage. DeGeneres said that while she is sensitive to homophobia, she also accepts his apology.

- Ellen DeGeneres (@TheEllenShow) January 4, 2019I feel like if you're not homophobic anymore, you shouldn't mind apologizing for your past homophobia again and again and again. "I had an incredible and honest conversation with @KevinHart4real about hosting the #Oscars", she tweeted. Because I wanna be done with the conversation. "Either I can move forward, or I can't".

The talk show host, who was recently named the most admired LGBT+ person in the U.S., also shared clips of the conversation on social media.

When DeGeneres tweeted about the interview on Thursday, fans had mixed feelings to the news: some commended DeGeneres for giving Hart a platform on which to speak while others argued Hart did not deserve the chance.

Later in the clip, Hart says that he's "evaluating this conversation", neither confirming nor denying that he would be interested in returning as Oscars host.

Though he stayed firm on his stance that he won't host the show, he does believe that he'll be on the stage one day, and insisted that "there's no ill will toward the Academy".
