The Golden Globes got a few things right

This is the second time a superhero live action film has been nominated for a Golden Globe award for Best Picture; In 2016, Deadpool was nominated for Best Motion Picture - for a musical or comedy although it lost out against La La Land.

Beyond its best comedy film nod, "Vice" - a searing look at George W. Bush's powerful vice president - picked up a trio of acting nominations for a almost unrecognisable Bale, co-star Amy Adams as Cheney's wife Lynne and Sam Rockwell as Bush. She didn't win but made a big splash by bringing her parents to the awards show.

Canadian actress Sandra Oh and United States comedian Andy Samberg will co-host the 2019 Golden Globe Awards in January, organisers said on Wednesday.

Charlize Theron and Robert Redford both scored lead acting nominations for films that seemed to have slipped off the awards radar: Theron, as a stressed-out mother in "Tully", and Redford, as a gentleman bank robber in "The Old Man and the Gun".

Queen film Bohemian Rhapsody, which tracks the rise of queer music legend Freddie Mercury, has been nominated for best drama film, as well as best actor for Rami Malek. He hosted the Emmys in 2015 and the Film Independent Spirit Awards in 2013. Further adding to the oddness, Eighth Grade's Elsie Fisher was recognized for her performance, but Ethan Hawke got the shaft for his First Reformed turn as an alcoholic priest with a crisis of faith.

Lucas Hedges, who said earlier this year that he was "not totally straight, but also not gay and not necessarily bisexual", was also nominated for best actor in a drama film for his portrayal of main character Jared Eamons. On the TV front, This Is Us was completely ignored.

The Americans, Bodyguard, Homecoming, Killing Eve, and Pose received nominees for Best Television Series - Drama, while Barry, The Good Place, Kidding, The Kominsky Method, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel were nominated for Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy.

Oh will be the first person of colour ever to host the event. Barbra Streisand won for her 1984 film, Yentl.
