North Korean Soldier Defects Across Border, Says South Korea's Military

The North Korean soldier, who defected to the South across the heavily armed border on Saturday, is in his late teens or early 20s, a government source said.

President Donald Trump said a second summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un will likely take place in January or February.

South Korean soldiers escorted the defector to safety after finding him moving south of the eastern side of the military demarcation line that bisects the Koreas, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.

The military said no unusual North Korean military activity was reported on Saturday.

The Koreas and the U.S. -led U.N. Command recently finished removing firearms and troops from the jointly controlled area at the border village of Panmunjom, and eventually plan to allow tourists to freely move around there.

In June, Trump and Kim opened up a face-to-face dialogue after months of trading military threats and pointed barbs.

Moon said it's still unclear whether Kim will visit Seoul by the end of this year, and that it's up to the North Korean leader.
