MEXICO CITY, Dec. 3 (UPI) - Thousands of migrants from the Central American caravan in Tijuana, Mexico, have put their names on a waitlist for a preliminary political asylum interview with US authorities - a wait that could be many months.

Recently, a security camera showed a family dropping their six kids 18 feet over the border wall to America soil, only to be picked up by border patrol agents and returned to the other side.

"We have a challenging and still potentially volatile situation in Tijuana".

The attempt to cross into the U.S. illegally came just days after the migrants were transferred from one temporary shelter to another after it had become unsanitary.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection released surveillance video showing what looks to be two migrant children being handed over from the Mexico side of the wall into Arizona. "That is not the case", U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan said in an interview Tuesday morning.

Ninety minutes later, she and her family were over the fence. All surrendered to border patrol agents who arrived on the scene.

According to Reuters, later into the night more migrants followed suit, and many had children with them.

Human rights groups have question the legality of the president's proclamation.

Frustrated with the long wait to apply, with the USA processing 100 requests at most each day, some migrants are trying to cross over clandestinely.

"We've got criminal organizations profiting off of vulnerable families charging 5,000 to 7,000 per person", said McAleenan. "That's a $2.5 billion business of exploitation and we've got to stop it".

On Sunday, small groups of Central Americans scaled the border wall between Playas de Tijuana and the San Ysidro Port of Entry.

A video of the incident posted to Twitter by CBP Arizona shows the silhouettes of the two adults waiting on the US side of the wall to catch the children from above. Last year, more than 26,000 illegal immigrants were arrested in addition to almost 11,000 pounds of marijuana and 3,000 pounds of cocaine that were seized.

Plans for illegal crossings were curbed by the Trump administration's decision to send troops to protect the border and impose a new policy that requires every migrant seeking asylum to remain in Mexico, where their cases will be heard.

Mitch McConnell has already washed his hands of any responsibility for getting the Wall funded, saying it's up to Trump "to do a deal with the Democrats", and telling reporters in Louisville, "I think that's the path to getting a signature and avoiding a government shutdown".

The President has repeatedly threatened to "completely close" the entire southern border should the crisis escalate. And his supporters - that is 80 to 90 percent of Republican voters - expect Congress to act to fulfill that pledge.
