Four Dead Amid Car Blast, Shooting in Southern Iranian Port of Chabahar

At least three people died and 24 others were injured in a suicide auto bomb attack on the police headquarters in Iran's southeast on Thursday, state media reported, adding that the perpetrator was killed.

A suicide auto bombing was followed by an armed assault in Chabahar, Iran.

Mohammad Mehran Aminifar, head of Medical Sciences University in Zahedan, the capital of southeastern Sistan and Baluchistan province, told state TV that 42 people were wounded, including four kids and a pregnant woman. "The suicide attacker set off the explosion after stopping at police headquarters in Chabahar".

State authorities did not identify who was behind the attack.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack.

TV also reported shooting in the area, which is located in the mainly Sunni province of Sistan-Baluchestan that has always been plagued by unrest from both drug smuggling gangs and separatist militants.

State TV also showed footage of smoke rising over the city. Reuters could not verify the authenticity of the videos.

Meanwhile, Rahmdel Bameri, caretaker of the Governor's Office in Chabahar County, underlined the strategic significance of the city as a free trade zone, which has a deep-water port on the Sea of Oman.

"We express our condolences to the government and the people of Iran and the families of the victims of this attack", the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

While rare, Iran has been targeted by armed groups in recent years. Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, blamed Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates for the attack, allegations denied by both countries.

"Mark my words: Iran WILL bring terrorists & their masters to justice", the foreign minister emphasized.
"There can be no justification for any act of terror", the MEA said.

India is developing the Chabahar port along with Iran and Afghanistan.
