News of his death last night was confirmed by his son, George W Bush, in a statement.

The Republican politician also served as a congressman, ambassador and director of Central Intelligence.

His wife, Barbara Bush, passed away on April 17 at the age of 92.

Through his essential authenticity, disarming wit, and unwavering commitment to faith, family, and country, President Bush inspired generations of his fellow Americans to public service-to be, in his words, "a thousand points of light" illuminating the greatness, hope, and opportunity of America to the world.

With Reagan barred by the U.S. Constitution from serving more than two terms, Bush plotted a presidential run for 1988, ultimately defeating the Democratic nominee, Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis.

"Jeb, Neil, Marvin, Doro, and I are saddened to announce that after 94 remarkable years, our dear Dad has died", wrote George Bush Jr.in a statement. He was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Barbara; his second child Pauline Robinson "Robin" Bush; and his brothers Prescott and William or "Bucky" Bush.

Over 6,000 people attended Mrs Bush's funeral.

Bush famously vowed: "This will not stand, this aggression against Kuwait".

Buoyed by his victory in the Gulf, Bush and his hard-nosed and widely respected secretary of state James Baker cobbled together the 1991 Madrid Conference to launch the Arab-Israeli peace process. As President, he set the stage for the decades of prosperity that have followed.

However, once in office, he reneged on that promise and raised several taxes in an attempt to reduce the national budget deficit in a compromise deal with Congressional Democrats.

In his rise to the presidency, Bush held a variety of key positions over the years, often deemed by Republican presidents as the most qualified man in USA public life.

He joined Clinton to raise funds for victims of the 2004 Asian tsunami and the 2010 Haiti quake.

George Bush Sr was visited by former president Barack Obama two days ago, according to the family's spokesman.

Only one other USA president, John Adams, had a son who also became president.
