Last night, 23-year old Ada Hegerberg made history by becoming the first ever female Ballon d'Or victor - but her special moment was somewhat overshadowed by host Martin Solveig asking her about twerking after she collected her award.

A four-second clip of the interaction, depicting Solveig's question and Hegerberg's seemingly annoyed reaction, devoid of any other context, quickly made its rounds on social media.

"Sincere apologies to the one I may have offended", Solveig posted on Twitter. "I, of course, didn't want to offend anyone", he continues.

"This was a joke, probably a bad one, and I want to apologise for the one that I may have offended".

When Hegerberg turned to walk off the stage, Solveig instead asked her to dance to Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me To The Moon".

He also explained that he spoke to Hegerberg afterwards to discuss the incident.

Unfortunately, the event was marred by host Martin Solveig's inappropriately timed joke.

Hegerberg, who led Lyon to Champions League and league title, maintained she didn't consider the much-talked-about episode as "sexual harassment" and that she was happy to do the dance at that moment. "Sometimes you have episodes or situations where you feel like, damn, we're in such a man's world", she said in an interview.

When Norwegian footballer Ada Hegerberg became the first woman to win the Ballon D'Or, she likely wasn't expecting to get asked about her dancing prowess.

She continued: "Yeah I had a lot of questions about this subject". "It's a huge step for women's football".

The decorated Hegerberg, whose trophy cabinet already boasts a UEFA Best Women's Player award and BBC Women's Footballer of the Year honor, beat out fellow stars Dzsenifer Marozsan, Marta, Sam Kerr, and Pernille Harder to capture Monday's inaugural crown. I didn't really think about it at the time to be honest.

Hegerberg took the opportunity to call out then-Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo, who ended his Champions League campaign on 14 goals.

Ada Hegerberg wins the 2018 Ballon D'Or.

The first awarding of a women's Ballon d'Or was overshadowed when the victor was asked to "twerk" on stage after being handed the prize.

"I would like to end this speech with some young girls all over the world, please, believe in yourself", she said.
