UN Security Council to discuss sanctions against North Korea upon Russia's request

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will meet with his North Korean counterpart in NY this week to continue discussions on the denuclearization of the regime, the State Department said Monday.

The U.S. State Department says Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Kim Yong-chol, the head of Pyeongyang's intelligence agency, will meet in NY on Thursday to discuss denuclearization and the implementation of the June 12th summit declaration. But the Blue House would not reveal the reason for the postponement, referring questions to the State Department.

"We will reconvene when our respective schedules permit", she added in a statement.

Pompeo will meet with Kim Yong Chol, vice chairman of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) Central Committee.

While both the US and South Korea all want peace and stability in the Korea peninsula, there is a "fear" that fast-developing inter-Korean relations may get out of step with Washington, according to former USA officials and experts.
