Thousand Oaks bar shooting: 13 dead including gunman and sheriff's deputy

Terrified people inside Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, part of the Greater Los Angeles area in California, hid under tables during the shooting, The Mirror reported.

Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean says sheriff's Sgt. Ron Helus responded to the scene and was shot after he entered the building.

A gunman shot and killed 11 people including a sheriff's deputy Wednesday in Southern California, using a handgun and smoke bombs at a country dance bar on "college night" and sending hundreds of panicking people toward the exits with some breaking windows to escape, authorities and witnesses said.

At least one officer called to the scene was injured.

Multiple people have been injured in a shooting at a bar in southern California, authorities said.

Dean said around 10 other people were wounded in the shooting.

"It's a horrific scene in there".

Police tell the Los Angeles Times that at least 30 shots were fired at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, which is about 40 miles west of Los Angeles.
