Ted Cruz fends off Beto O'Rourke in Texas Senate race

In the aftermath of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando in June 2016, O'Rourke live-streamed a sit-in by House Democrats to protest Republicans' refusal to bring gun control legislation to the floor for a vote.

Cruz did show the humility to pay tribute to O'Rourke for his campaign - as the boos rang out among his supporters - and what he had done to mobilise and energise young voters.

Before Triumph interviewed Cruz, he spoke to his opponent, Beto O'Rourke (pictured). "This election was a battle of ideas". The days of "Lyin' Ted" being humiliated by Trump are a distant memory for Texas Republicans. Both said strong early voting statewide was a good sign for them.

The demographics of Texas, like numerous western states, are shifting.

The U.S. Senate race in Texas was one of the most closely watched and expensive races in the country.

In fact it was extraordinary that a seat in Texas was even in play.

He also said O'Rourke's support for impeaching Trump, relaxing federal immigration policy, decriminalising marijuana and implementing universal health care were too liberal for even numerous state's moderate Democrats and independents.

"My confidence is in the people of Texas", O'Rourke told reporters on Monday night, moments before staging a raucous rally with Mariachi band at the University of Texas at El Paso, mere blocks from his home.

"You told me this is very emotional for you", Haake noted.

Cruz scoffs at the notion that O'Rourke could beat him. Polling has at times shown a close race, but Cruz has consistently led.

Even that was a shock for Cruz, who won 10-plus contests during the 2016 Republican presidential primary and has always been considered the most powerful and popular conservative in a state full of them. He is, however, likely too liberal to win in Texas, as he supports Medicare for All, supports banning AR-15 rifles, and wants to impeach President Donald Trump.

The tightness of the race meant Cruz had to lean on his former political rival - President Trump, whom he competed against in the 2016 Republican presidential primary.
