But Pompeo emphasized, as Trump has, that "not only do we have important commercial relationships, but important strategic relationships, national security relationships with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and we intend to make sure that those relationships remain intact".

"Jamal Khashoggi's abduction and murder is extremely troubling".

Hatice Cengiz, Khashoggi's fiancee, has written in the Washington Post, calling on the global community to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The timing of the meeting came as the Washington Post reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had asked senior members of the Trump administration to continue supporting Bin Salman despite the controversy surrounding his involvement in the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

The kingdom sacked two top aides to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as well three intelligence officials and arrested 18 Saudi suspects. Khashoggi, who had arrived at the consulate to obtain papers to facilitate his marriage with Turkish girlfriend Hatice, was in the Consul General's room when he was grabbed by the squad.

"The whole world has been shocked by this grotesque killing, and it's vital that we don't let the outrage fade away without justice being done", Kate Allen, Amnesty International UK's Director said.

Turkish officials appear to have dismissed a theory that Jamal Khashoggi's body was given to a mystery local collaborator in Istanbul.

Johnnie Moore, the group's spokesman who also serves as the White House's unofficial liaison to conservative evangelicals, said they "discussed" Khashoggi's killing, but declined to elaborate, and he insisted they were not representing Israel or Trump in any way.

Saudi Arabia has maintained for years that normalizing relations with Israel hinges on its withdrawal from Arab lands captured in the 1967 Middle East war - territory Palestinians seek for a future state.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says it will be several weeks before any possible sanctions are imposed on Saudi Arabia over the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

"We underlined how seriously we take this issue again yesterday, when he was at the Foreign Ministry for a discussion".

Recent reports also speculate the journalist may have been assassinated for preparing a report about the planned use of chemical weapons by the Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen.

What has his fiancée said?

"We must all send a clear message that authoritarian regimes can not kill journalists ever again".

"Today I am inviting the global community to take serious and practical steps to reveal the truth and to prosecute those involved in a court of law".

She called on governments around the world to take action to reveal the truth, accusing the United States of taking a position "devoid of moral foundation".
