3 children killed, 1 critically injured after being hit at bus stop

Three children were killed and another was seriously injured at a bus stop in the Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation.

According to IN law, vehicles must stop upon meeting, from either direction, a school bus that is stopped for loading or unloading children and displays or has recently displayed a stop signal arm.

Authorities do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.

'What do you tell your little brother, how do you tell your little brother it's gonna get better? That child is an 11-year-old boy. A fourth child was critically injured and airlifted to a hospital.

Police in IN said the girl and her brothers died at the scene near Rochester, about 100 miles north of Indianapolis.

Slocum didn't say which school the children attend.

An uncle of the siblings said the family previously reached out to school officials to say it's not safe for kids to cross the highway, especially at the time of the morning when it's still dark. The fourth child, 11-year-old Maverik Lowe was flown, via Samaritan Helicopter, to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.

The National Transportation Safety Board has also sent a team of investigators to look into the circumstances surrounding the collision.

The crash happened at about 7:30 a.m., near the intersection of State Road 25 and CR 400 N, according to Indiana State Police. Shepherd stayed at the scene after the crash and is cooperating with police, Slocum told ABC News. Tony Slocum calls the accident a "terrible tragedy".

ISP allege Shepherd didn't come to a stop on S.R. 25 when the bus was stopped, killing three children and leaving another in critical condition.
