Mr Trump emphasised the importance of the US-Saudi relationship to Washington's regional strategic goals.

Germany joined France and the United Kingdom in a call for a "credible" investigation into the disappearance and death of Khashoggi, a prominent critic of Saudi policies, who was last seen entering Saudi consulate on October 2.

Salah expressed his honest thanks to King Salman and Crown Prince for their condolences, according to SPA. "We will ultimately make our judgement based on the credibility of the further explanation we receive about what happened and our confidence that such a shameful event can not and will not ever be repeated".

WAN-IFRA, in which The Globe and Mail is a member, condemned the "growing culture of impunity for crimes against journalists"; the Saudi officials presumably believed they would be protected by this.

Turkish officials suspect Khashoggi was killed inside the consulate by the Saudi agents and his body cut up.

Slowly but surely, the facts are coming out - no thanks to Saudi Arabia.

The European Union says the emerging details of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi's death are "deeply troubling" and that a "continued thorough, credible and transparent investigation" is needed. He adds Saudi officials do not know the whereabouts of Khashoggi's remains.

"But Saturday, in an interview with The Washington Post, Trump said, "Obviously there's been deception and there's been lies".

For Saudi Arabia's allies - particularly in the West - the question will be whether they believe that the prince, who has painted himself as a reformer, has any culpability.

Meghan Markle Wears Bump-Hugging Dress on Royal Tour
Somehow, the Duchess of Sussex found time in the midst of her busy touring schedule in Australia to head to the kitchen to bake. For the 15,000 strong crowd, the visit was a desperately needed boost to morale.

Britain, Germany and France issued a joint statement condemning the killing of Khashoggi, saying there is an "urgent need for clarification of exactly what happened".

Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir told Fox News' Bret Baier on Sunday that Khashoggi's death was part of a "rogue operation" and that 18 people implicated in his slaying would be punished.

Earlier this week German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said that there was "no basis" to continue arms sales to Saudi Arabia "as long as we don't know what happened".

Yet nothing the Saudis disclosed Friday explains the insistence by Turkey that it has audio evidence proving Khashoggi was tortured, killed and dismembered minutes after entering the consulate.

President Trump described the Saudi announcement as "a good first step".

The crown prince has denied any involvement.

King Salman expressed his deepest sympathy in a telephone call Sunday to Salah Jamal Khashoggi, the son of the 59-year-old journalist, who died in Istanbul early this month.

"Do I think he did it?"

Speaking late Saturday after a campaign rally in Nevada, he said he will be talking to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman soon.
