This year's World Mental Health Day focuses on young people.

"We hope this small step will help those who need to take time out for their personal wellbeing to do so without feeling a stigma".

About one in five adults in the US experiences some form of mental illness each year, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, but only 41 per cent of those affected received mental health care or services in the past year.

For example, children with conduct disorder are twice more likely to drop out of school, four times more likely to become addicted to drugs and twenty times more likely to end up in jail.

Stress is the most common response, with over half (55%) experiencing this frequently or occasionally, compared to 54% for sleeplessness, 47% for low mood, and 41% for anxiety.

More than 200,000 people have signed a petition calling for mental health to be given as much importance as physical health at work. "If mental health issues are tackled as soon as they occur, they may not degenerate to mental illnesses", he said.

But this government has come nowhere near the scale of ambition we need for improving our mental health across the United Kingdom, especially in the workforce. "I would really like to see a world where people who experience mental illness are free from stigma. stigma reduction is absolutely the foundation piece, but we can't stop there; we then need to provide appropriate, adequate and well-resourced help and support so that people can lead a very full and very flourishing life".
