Khashoggi was victim of an extrajudicial execution — United Nations official

A columnist for The Washington Post, Khashoggi was last seen on October 2 when he entered the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.

Turkish authorities maintain that Khashoggi was tortured, killed and dismembered in a premeditated operation organized by Saudi government officials.

Turkish investigators have recorded statements of 38 employees of the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, as part of a probe into killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, judicial sources said on Thursday.

Asked by a reporter in the White House how the Khashoggi killing could have happened, Trump said: "They had a very bad original concept".

Turkish officials suspect Saudi agents killed Khashoggi, 59, inside the consulate and cut up his body.

Turkish officials especially are pushing the Saudi government to identify who ordered the killing.

Haspel made a secret visit to Turkey this week to check evidence of audio recordings provided by Turkey that it claims capture the murder, The Washington Post reported on Wednesday. It was not clear what could be heard.

French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Theresa May both spoke via telephone with King Salman, according to a statement issued by the Saudi Foreign Ministry late Thursday, hours after the European Parliament's resolution passed. "(Saudis said) "Let's give a lesson to him".

However, Trump also said that he wanted to believe that rogue operatives were behind the Khashoggi killing.

Turkish police were investigating water samples from a well at the consulate on Thursday after initially being denied access, broadcaster CNN Turk said.

The U.S. State Department later confirmed that Salah Khashoggi was on his way to the U.S.

A photograph of the meeting showed Salah staring coldly at the prince as the pair shook hands. He had been planning to settle in Istanbul and marry his Turkish fiancee when he was detained and killed in the Saudi Consulate. Several carried cardboard images of his face and signs reading "Khashoggi's friends".

It's unclear when the president will make a final determination on the Khashoggi case.

But striking a defiant tone, the crown prince told worldwide investors at the three-day gathering on Wednesday that the furore would not derail the kingdom's reform drive.

"But we have enough right now to determine that the government of Saudi Arabia is responsible and is implicated".
