Tropical-force winds, rain from Gordon slam into Gulf Coast

The storm was centred at a distance of 153 kilometres away from the Fort Myers of Florida while the wind of speed was measured to be 60 miles per hour as reported by the National Hurricane Centre by 8 p.m. ET.

Much of the central Gulf Coast was under a hurricane warning late Monday as Tropical Storm Gordon, which is expected to strengthen, continued its march from the Florida Keys.

Gordon lashed South Florida with heavy rains and high winds Monday.

Gordon is expected to strengthen into a hurricane before crashing ashore along the MS coast sometime late Tuesday or early Wednesday. Maximum sustained winds were clocked at 65 miles per hour.

More than 27,000 customers were without power as Gordon began pushing ashore, mostly in coastal Alabama and the western tip of the Florida Panhandle around Pensacola, with a few hundred in southeastern Mississippi.

A slow-moving storm system is causing heavy rain and flooding from Kansas to IL.

The storm was gaining strength and was expected to become a hurricane as it comes ashore late on Tuesday near the border between Louisiana and MS, and drop as much as 20cm of rain in some areas of the US South still reeling from hurricanes a year ago.

Several storm systems are bringing flash flooding from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes.

Most recently, Hurricane Lane brushed past Hawaii last week, delivering a total 50 inches of rain and casting trees into the streets. Tropical Storm Warnings are also in effect for inland areas of Collier, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties.
