Former rap mogul Marion "Suge" Knight pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter on Thursday, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

Knight, co-founder of influential hip-hop label Death Row Records, entered the plea ahead of his scheduled trial on murder charges stemming from accusations that he ran down two men with his pickup truck near a burger stand in the Los Angeles suburb of Compton on January 29, 2015.

Knight killed Terry Carter, 55, a Compton, California, businessman, and injured a security consultant, Cle Sloan, when he ran over both at a local burger stand.

Suge Knight took a plea deal today (Sept. 20) in his murder case and will now be serving a 28-year jail sentence.

The agreement also absolves Knight in two other cases, both from 2014.

Police respond to possible active shooter in Middleton, Wisconsin
The four victims who were shot and were taken to University Hospital, it is unclear the extent of their injuries. The Middleton Police Department said in an alert that there was an "active shooter in the area".

Though he had faced the possibility of life in prison, if convicted of murdering Carter, his plea deal calls for a 22-year sentence for voluntary manslaughter, plus another six years because this was a third-strike violation. Sloan has denied he was carrying a gun during the confrontation. Knight reportedly fled the scene of the incident before authorities arrived.

Knight's legal team attempted to argue that their client was acting in self-defense, alleging that Sloan was armed, but it didn't seem to hold up in court.

Suge Knight's controversial history and reputation was considered during sentencing.

While his label was initially very successful, his fortunes began to slide in 1996 when rapper Tupac Shakur was shot and killed in the passenger seat of Knight's auto. Knight denied it and the suit was dismissed.
