Poland suggests 'Fort Trump' as US weighs military base

US President Donald Trump said Tuesday he is seriously considering a request from Poland for US troops to be permanently based in the strategically important country on Europe's flank with an "aggressive" Russian Federation.

"Poland is willing to make a very major contribution to the United States to come in and have a presence in Poland, and certainly it's something we'll discuss", Trump said at the White House before a meeting with Polish President Andrzej Duda.

"I invite you to post more American military troops in Poland", Duda said, calling a U.S. presence a "guarantor of security".

Poland floated the same offer to the U.S.in May, prompting a swift response from Russian officials.

In a joint statement released later on Tuesday, after the press conference, Trump and Duda said they will continue coordinating efforts "to counter energy projects that threaten our mutual security, such as Nord Stream 2".

According to Reuters, Poland has repeatedly requested a permanent USA military presence on their soil as a defense against Russian Federation. A decision from the US could come early next year. "We're looking at it from, number one, military protection for both countries, and also, cost".

He cited Russia's invasion of Georgia in 2008, its annexation of Crimea in 2014, and more recently, violations of ceasefire agreements in the provinces of Donetsk and Luhansk in Ukraine, as tangible "threat of aggression".

Earlier during the event, Trump said the USA makes "the greatest military equipment by far" and said it makes sense for wealthy nations to subsidize the costs of the US security presence in the country.
