Plane overshoots runway in Micronesia, sinks in sea lagoon

A flotilla of small boats has rescued more than 40 people from an Air Niugini plane that crashed into a lagoon in the South Pacific nation of Micronesia.

All of the passengers and crew that were on board an Air Niugini plane that crashed into a lagoon in the Federated States of Micronesia are reported to be safe.

"I thought, well, this is not like the way it's supposed to happen", he said.

The Boeing 737-800 was carrying a total of 47 people, including 36 passengers and 11 crew members, Emilio said.

The plane was being operated by Air Niugini, the national airline of Papua New Guinea.

The passengers managed to escape from the plane with some getting out onto the wings, locals arrived shortly after on small boats to assist with the rescue operation.

Air Niugini began made its first official flight from Port Moresby to Chuuk in September 2016; recently the airline launched its first direct flight from Japan's Narita Airport to Chuuk.

Fortunately, all people on the plane were rescued after the crash and no one sustained any serious injury. The airline is making all efforts to ensure the safety and immediate needs of our passengers and crew.

All through Micronesia generally runways are short, according to Giff Johnson, who's based in the Marshall Islands capital, Majuro. "They were awesome and I was really impressed", he said.

Air Niugini is PNG's national carrier which services domestic network and global routes across Australia, Asia and the Pacific.

PNG's Accident Investigation Commission is preparing a team to travel to the crash site just off the island of Weno.
