Michelle Guthrie must be wondering why she signed up for a job for which she can be sacked "without cause" and without compensation.

"I recognise the challenges involved in transitions of this kind but I am honoured to accept the board's invitation and look forward to working with our outstanding people to execute our strategy". In the first two years of my five-year term, I have invested more in investigative journalism; more in regional journalism; more in innovative content; and increased the efficiency and effectiveness of work across the ABC.

"In an ideal world, I would like to see our relationship - I think the relationship between the ABC and Government is, on the one hand, hard because of course we need to be independent from government, but it is an important relationship because the government funds us".

The ABC Chairman has confirmed that the Australian national broadcaster's Managing Director Michelle Guthrie has left her position.

David Anderson, ABC director, entertainment & specialist, has been invited by the Board to serve as acting managing director until the role is filled.

He said Ms Guthrie had "been all but invisible" and when she was approached, all she would respond with "was all jargon".

Michelle Guthrie's lack of passion for the ABC and her tin-ear will not be missed by ABC staff.
