Trump tweeted just hours before both leaders were set to speak at the UN General Assembly, and four months after the USA president ditched the Iran nuclear deal.

President Donald Trump called out Iran in his remarks to the General Assembly.

"We do not wish to go to war with American forces in the region", Rouhani told a news conference.

Commenting on being called "a lovely man" by Trump, Rouhani said the U.S. president is merely "playing with words and will not get us to any solutions".

NEW YORK - Iran's president struck back at Donald Trump on Tuesday, hours after the United States leader delivered a speech castigating the foreign policy of the Islamic Republic.

He said the nuclear deal put Western powers in a stronger position to raise other concerns highlighted by Washington including Iran's support of militant groups Hamas and Hezbollah.

Trump said the isolation could be achieved by denying Tehran funds to continue sponsoring terrorism.

Trump used his speech on Tuesday to tout his administration's accomplishments, decry USA adversaries such as Iran, and touch on issues over which he's long expressed concern, such as global trade and mass migration. Their efforts to isolate Iran, he said, were "neutralized".

In his message before the UN Security Council, Macron said that while the 2015 deal is "imperfect", it ensures that Iran would not be able to obtain nuclear weapons. After that, the United States will pursue additional sanctions, tougher than ever before, to counter the entire range of Iran's malign conduct.

"I didn't expect that reaction, but that's OK", he said.

He also condemned "recklessness and disregard of some states for global values and institutions" referring to the USA pullout from the deal which Trump deemed ineffective in stopping Iran from funding terrorist activity in the region.

In a blunt attack on China, the USA president told the council that China wanted to see him suffer an elections setback because of his hard line on trade. There, he said, both sides can listen to each other. Trump, who said this week he will have a second summit with Kim "quite soon", emphasized that Pyongyang has not tested a ballistic missile since the engagement process began early this year.

Mr Rouhani never used the US President's name but his words were clearly directly aimed at the American firebrand.

Trump had stated that Iran's military budget rose by 40 percent since the nuclear deal was signed.

The comments come just after Bolton assured the world that America is not actively seeking regime change in Iran.

For now, though, Rouhani made clear that Iran is not looking for a clash with the US.
