'Extremely Dangerous' Florence On Track to Hit East Coast As Major Hurricane

Hurricane Florence is forecast to become a major hurricane by Monday, and will make a run for the East Coast by the end of the week.

SC and Virginia declared states of emergencies to give residents time to make preparations for the severe weather.

Florence is forecasted to become a major hurricane on Monday and will become a Category 4 Tuesday, maintaining that strength through Wednesday and into Thursday. Forecast models show the center of Florence cutting between the Bahamas and Bermuda on September 11 and September 12 before making landfall on the night of September 13, and it appears that the storm is still targeting around North and SC.

Florence was in the Atlantic about 1,500 miles from the coast and 750 miles from Bermuda, moving west at 6 mph, the center said.

SURF: Swells generated by Florence are affecting Bermuda and are beginning to reach portions of the U.S. East Coast.

The third hurricane in the Atlantic, Hurricane Florence, could pose a danger to parts of the U.S.

Swells generated by Florence could cause risky rip currents and coastal flooding on Saturday in areas including coastal DE and New Jersey, the National Weather Service said.

Aircraft data indicate that maximum sustained winds have increased to near 75 miles per hour (120 km/h) with higher gusts.

US residents from SC to Virginia were warned that Florence posed an increasing risk of life-threatening coastal storm surge, as well as flooding from heavy rainfall inland.

At this statistical height of the Atlantic hurricane season, Florence was being trailed on east-to-west paths by two hurricanes, Helene and Issac.

There are now no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 75 miles per hour (120 km/h) with higher gusts.

The Category 1 hurricane remained 580 miles northeast of the northern Leeward Islands, which include Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, the center said.

Hurricane Florence continues to travel west over very warm ocean water which will act as fuel and intensify the storm.

It added: "The largest threat to life from hurricanes is not the high winds".

The South Carolina Emergency Management Division tweeted Sunday that officials there are "preparing for the possibility of a large-scale disaster".
