In addition to Morton, the head of HR, Gabrielle Toledo, ran for the hills, informing Tesla that she won't return to the company after her current leave of absence.

Morton, a former CFO for computer-drive maker Seagate Technology, joined Tesla one day before Musk tweeted that he was considering buying out some investors at $420 a share and taking the company private.

The company, hurt in the past month by Musk's high-profile U-turn on a deal to take it private, said Chief Accounting Officer Dave Morton had resigned, citing discomfort with the level of public attention and pace of work. "As a result, this caused me to reconsider my future".

Overall, Morton appears to have parted ways with Tesla amicably, stating that he still believes in the company's overall mission, as well as its future prospects.

"I'm not a regular smoker of weed", the Tesla CEO said late Thursday on the podcast, which was shown live on the internet. "I don't actually notice any effect".

Tesla was not immediately available for comment - but investors apparently weren't giddy over the Musk toke. Morton worked for the company for only a month.

"The judgment of the chief executive is coming under scrutiny", said Christopher Sullivan, chief investment officer at United Nations Federal Credit Union.

He told Rogan he thinks that merging humans with computers is the approach that "seems probably the best for us: if you can't beat it, join it".

Long a polarizing figure because of his swashbuckling style, Musk's champions see him as an entrepreneurial genius with the potential to remake the transportation system, while his detractors see him as an egotistical blowhard whose outsized promises have driven unjustified gains in the company's values.

Days after Elon Musk made headlines for repeating unsubstantiated allegations that a British diver involved in the Thailand cave rescue is a pedophile, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX provoked more investor uncertainty when he appeared to smoke a blunt on-air during a podcast.

"Is that a joint, or is it a cigar?" a bewildered Musk asked before smoking it on camera.

Meanwhile, shareholder activist and short-seller Andrew E. Left sued Tesla and Musk on Thursday, alleging that Musk "artificially manipulated the price of Tesla securities with objectively false tweets in order to "burn" the Company's short-sellers".

Analysts on Friday reiterated their call for Tesla to bring in another senior leader.

All these antics have led many business observers to call for Tesla's board to get help for Musk and relieve him of some of his responsibilities. Since the start of the year, 41 executives have left, according to CNBC.

Shares in Tesla fell by as much as 9% on the same day the electric auto maker lost two executives and its boss was filmed smoking cannabis during an interview.
