The 14-time major victor hit a one-over 71 at East Lake to top the elite 30-player field as his closest overnight challengers Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose struggled to mount any resistance.

He is now just two tournament wins behind Sam Snead for the all-time record, pocketing the $US1.62 million ($2.23m) in prize money after finishing two shots ahead of fellow American Billy Horschel, with Dustin Johnson two shots further back in third.

England's world number one Justin Rose finished tied fourth to secure the overall FedEx Cup which determines the season-long PGA Tour champion.

"I had a hard time not crying up the last hole", he said.

Coming into the final day with a three-shot lead over Rory McIlroy, the Irish golfer's chances quickly faded as Woods demonstrated some of the form of old.

Tiger Woods is a victor again, capping off one of the most remarkable comebacks in golf history.

Tiger Woods returned to golf last December at No. 1,199 in the world ranking. The gallery at East Lake was enormous in anticipation of Woods winning for the first time in more than five years.
