FOX-7 Austin's Mike Warren talked to Gary Teal, the Travis county Republican party executive director, and Tariq Thowfeek, communications director with the Texas Democratic party about the president admitting that his son Donald Trump Jr. had a meeting with a Russian lawyer to get dirt on Hillary Clinton.

President Donald Trump has been urged to stop tweeting about the 2016 Trump Tower meeting between Trump's top advisers and several Russians, a source familiar with discussions tells CNN.

"This was a meeting to get information on an opponent, totally legal and done all the time in politics", the president said.

"The Fake News hates me saying that they are the Enemy of the People only because they know it's TRUE", Trump tweeted Sunday.

Trump Jr. has shifted his explanations for his Russian meeting.

The story changed with news that publicist Rob Goldstone, who who set up the meeting, told the younger Trump that the lawyer had derogatory information about Clinton.

He was responding to a Washington Post report over the weekend that although he does not think his eldest son intentionally broke the law, he is anxious that Mr Trump Jr may have unintentionally stumbled into legal jeopardy and is embroiled in Mr Mueller's investigation largely because of his connection to the President.

This was initially denied by Mr Trump's team, but his lawyers later confirmed that he had in fact dictated his son's statement.

While Trump's public stance on the reason for the meeting has evolved since it was first reported a year ago, so too has his admission of involvement in crafting a statement on behalf of his son that explained this meeting, the report noted. Mr. Trump has repeatedly denied that members of his campaign colluded with the Russians.

Political campaigns routinely pursue opposition research on their opponents, but not with foreign representatives from a country viewed as an adversary.

Cohen has indicated that he would tell prosecutors that Trump knew about the Trump Tower meeting ahead of time.

On Sunday morning, Trump responded to reports in the Washington Post and on CNN that he was concerned Donald Jr. could be in legal trouble.

"In a change, Trump says meeting's objective was Clinton info".

KEITH: At the time campaign professionals from both sides of the aisle said, no, they would not have taken that meeting. This was later retracted after details emerged about why Junior had agreed to meet with the Russians.

And as Trump and his allies have tried to discredit the probe, a new talking point has emerged: that even if that meeting was held to collect damaging information, none was provided and "collusion" - Trump's go-to description of what Mueller is investigating - never occurred.

A senior Republican lawmaker on Sunday urged Trump to acknowledge to Americans that Russia's interference in USA elections is still a threat, something Moscow denies.

"There are federal statutes that prohibit receiving something of value from a foreign national, foreign entity, or foreign government", he continued.

Giuliani, one of Trump's lawyers, would not characterize the response. However, Trump argued collusion is totally legal.

Indeed, that's been the Trump team's story.

His comments were part of a broader Twitter rant Sunday, which also included a tweet falsely claiming the press "purposely cause great division & distrust".

"He has to stick to that part because if he says he knew about the meeting, that nearly certainly means Donald Jr. lied in front of Congress, and I think that that would nearly certainly mean that Donald Jr. would get indicted", Abrams said.

He called the "Fake" media "very unsafe and sick".
