But the state now has a popular moderate Republican governor, Phil Scott, who is favoured to win re-election in November.

Steil, a University of Wisconsin regent who described himself as a "problem solver", defeated a field that included conservative activist Paul Nehlen, who was banned by Twitter for posting racially insensitive tweets, and U.S. Army veteran Nick Polce.

"I am so proud to be the face of the Democrats tonight", Hallquist said, addressing supporters at a victory party Tuesday night. If she wins, she'll be the nation's first transgender governor.

Christine Hallquist became the first openly transgender major party nominee for governor in American history when she captured the Democratic Party nomination in Vermont. The majority are Democrats and, like Hallquist, and running on far broader, anti-Trump platforms than gay and civil rights.

The victor of Wisconsin's Republican primary for U.S. Senate says Republicans must now come together if they hope to defeat Democratic Sen. She also has pledged to support renewable energy in office.

Where/When to Watch the Perseid Meteor Shower this Weekend
The meteor shower started to break out into the night sky around mid-July and will carry on through to the last week of August. Perseid meteors pose no threat to Earth, as many of them burn up in the atmosphere more than 50 miles above the surface.

Following the AP projection, the Republican Governors Association (RGA) released a statement on Hallquist's victory: "Vermont Democrats have selected a candidate committed to increasing the tax burden on working families", RGA Spokesman John Burke said, referring to Hallquist's plan to increase some property taxes. His primary race against Hennepin County Commissioner Jeff Johnson became a contest over who insulted Trump the least. Scott said he expected the race, which he won by more than 30 percentage points, to be closer than it was.

Nehlen hit back at the "foolish and spineless" Republicans who criticized him, and insisted he remained a member of the Republican Party "regardless of what their traitorous, sleazy apparatchiks wish to believe".

He defeated former governor Tim Pawlenty, who was hoping to regain his old job.

Hallquist will now face Vermont Governor Phil Scott, seen on April 11, 2018 in Montpelier.

Scott managed to win the gubernatorial election in 2016 as a Republican, despite the fact Hillary Clinton carried the state at the presidential level with 61% of the vote. "It says something very important about Vermont, about the type of candidates we want to nominate, and the good work my team and I have done to grow the economy, make Vermont more affordable, and protect the most vulnerable". A poll conducted in July had some good news for the governor: two thirds of Vermonters said they support the gun law, and almost half of Democrats had a positive opinion of Scott.
