In the interview, when asked about the upcoming face-off for Florida governor against Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, DeSantis said, "The last thing, the last thing we need to do is to monkey this up by trying to embrace a socialist agenda with huge tax increases and bankrupting the state".

After DeSantis' monkey comment erupted online, Fox News anchor Sandra Smith raised it on the cable channel.

Mr DeSantis won his primary by touting his closeness to Mr Trump.

In an appearance on MSNBC's "Meet the Press Daily", Gillum told host Chuck Todd that the voters of Florida are "better than this".

More than 3.5 million people voted out of 13 million registered voters in the state for a turnout rate of 27 per cent, the highest for a non-presidential Florida primary since 2002. But in 2017, the Federal Bureau of Investigation issued subpoenas to the City of Tallahassee seeking development records.

Andrew Gillum's defeat of Gwen Graham for the Democratic nomination for governor was no surprise at all for his supporters in the progressive movement and African American communities. Gillum in his remarks to supporters on election night said he and supporters would seek to counter the "dark days that we've been under coming out of Washington".

The Florida gubernatorial election will be held on November 6.

"He says you want single payer health care system in Florida; you do want Medicare for all, correct?"

White House lowers flag for McCain again after backlash
Our words are too often cheap and imminently forgettable but John McCain paid our freight with his body and with his soul. Earlier Monday, a statement written by McCain before his death read like a not-so-veiled criticism of the president.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum says he doesn't plan to "get down in the gutter" with Ron DeSantis after the Trump-endorsed GOP nominee warned Floridians not to "monkey this up" by voting for Gillum.

The DeSantis campaign said it would be "absurd" to characterize his remarks as racist.

"They're going to be looking for a governor who is going to appeal to our higher aspirations as a state, who's going to talk about what it means to build a Florida that makes room for all of us and not just some of us, " Gillum continued. "I heard it right away, and I didn't hear it it any other way than the way I heard it - which was racist, planned, prepared and really ugly".

Before hearing the statement, Gillum was on CNN talking about the divisiveness of DeSantis and Trump.

Gillum brushed off Trump's tweet, saying, "I'm a Democrat, but I have to tell you that not much what Donald Trump says is actually based in fact".

The American Ledger notes that DeSantis was one of 52 administrators and moderators of the group until Wednesday when he quit the group.

The new approach - being taken by Gillum and also Abrams in Georgia and some Democrats in other states - eschews moderation and emphasizes advocacy of strongly progressive positions.

Critics said the language was racist.
