NVIDIA Just Announced The GeForce RTX 20 Series Featuring New Turing Architecture

With 4,352 CUDA cores and 11GB of GDDR6 video memory with a speed of 14Gbps and bandwidth of 616 GB/s, the new graphics card has some serious pixel-pushing power. Meanwhile, the RTX 2080, will go for $699. According to Nvidia, these are the retail prices for the third-party manufacturer cards. You can also pre-order the special "Founders Edition" of each card on Nvidia's site. Result applies to Founders Edition version. This includes the GeForce RTX 2070 priced at $599 (USD), GeForce RTX 2080 for $799 and the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti for $1,199.

All of this is packed beneath an elegant looking cooler which doesn't use the same design pattern as the GeForce 10 series founders edition cards. That new nomenclature is a nod to the ray-tracing capabilities of the new Turing architecture.

We can assume that MSI will continue launching GeForce RTX cards from its other families in the coming months. If true, this will be the biggest PC gaming graphics news since 2016.

That led us to speculate how well the next-gen GeForce cards will be able to render ray-tracing.

Ray tracing allows the computer to work out how light would behave as it interacts with different surfaces and objects at all kinds of angles.

The new GPU architecture has been created to support Nvidia's RTX suite of hardware and software algorithms to help generate ray tracing on the fly, hence the switch from the GTX nomenclature to the RTX prefix.

Normally, ray-tracing would take a serious amount of graphical power to run; we're talking Nvidia DXG supercomputer level.

The world's top game publishers, developers and engine creators have announced support for the NVIDIA RTX platform to bring the holy grail of real-time ray tracing and the power of AI to gamers everywhere. Have no doubt, this is a major architectural overhaul for Nvidia; the Turing Streaming Multiprocessor (SM) has a brand new design with the ability to perform independent floating point and integer operations. Upcoming games with ray tracing include Battlefield V, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Metro Exodus, Control, Assetto Corsa Competizione and more. Those of you who want to see what Turing's capable of will want to be on the lookout for those. The technology that most graphics solutions now use to create their model is called rasterization, and it simulates objects as a collection of polygons, works out the interaction between those shapes, and then turns that into pixels that get displayed on your screen.
