The US ambassador to London has said the United Kingdom should join Donald Trump in adopting a hardline attitude towards Iran. "We don't sympathize with the sanctions, we don't think they are appropriate, and we don't interact with them, but we are committed to protect our people". "We are asking global Britain to use its considerable diplomatic power and influence and join us as we lead a concerted global effort towards a genuinely comprehensive agreement", Johnson added.

US Ambassador to Britain Woody Johnson has urged the United Kingdom to drop out of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and follow the lead of President Donald Trump who left the "flawed" agreement in May.

The U.S. ambassador to London has publicly warned British Prime Minister Theresa May to side with President Donald Trump in the burgeoning transatlantic dispute over the controversial nuclear deal with Iran, which the U.S. leader withdrew from in May.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said last week that Trump's repudiation of the nuclear deal was illegal and Iran would not yield to Washington's renewed campaign to strangle Iran's vital oil exports.

Iran has said it will restart aspects of the uranium enrichment program if the nuclear deal unravels. The UK's trade with Iran was £365million in 2016.

Asked for comment on Johnson's op-ed, the British foreign office referred to comments made last week by Middle East Minister Alistair Burt.

Under the nuclear agreement, also known as the Comprehensive Plan of Joint Action, the Persian country pledged to enrich uranium to only 3.67 percent and surplus remit it to Russian Federation.

The administration says the renewed sanctions are meant to pressure Tehran to halt its alleged support for worldwide terrorism, its military activity in the Middle East and its ballistic missile programmes.

May's position is likely to become even more awkward in the coming days as she's forced to choose between European leaders, whose support she needs for a favorable Brexit deal or a US leader determined to secure EU compliance with reimposed sanctions on Iran, fear British officials.

Johnson said the Tehran regime had used the flow of money coming in to the country since the easing of sanctions not to improve the lives of ordinary Iranians but to beef up spending on the military and networks of proxy forces and terrorists.
