The Agalarov family was also central in striking a deal to bring Trump's Miss Universe pageant to Moscow in 2013.

Democrats skeptical of the Trump-led effort to protect the elections said they were glad there was now a focus on it. Trump held a National Security Council meeting on the subject last Friday and Bolton sent a letter to Senate Democratic leaders to describe the effort. Trump tweeted at Sessions hours after being updated by his legal team.

President Donald Trump wants to meet with investigators working on special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe because he believes he can convince them it is actually a "witch hunt".

In a series of tweets, he said Attorney General Jeff Sessions must halt the inquiry into alleged election meddling.

Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani rejected the idea that Trump's tweets could be used against him in an obstruction-of-justice case.

People inside the White House said the burst of tweets reflected the anger Trump has aired privately for months, including about Sessions.

Trump's tweets came at a particularly sensitive time in the investigation, as a federal jury in Virginia is hearing evidence in Manafort's trial on tax evasion and fraud charges.

On Tuesday night, Trump flew back from Florida with former aides who have stoked his anger and impulses in the past: current campaign manager Brad Parscale and former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski. "Quite frankly, a lot of what we've had to work through over months and months is working with the states to make sure the states are in a place that they wanna be able to sign off on this bill".

White House press secretary addresses President Trump's tweet about the Mueller probe.

But Democrats on Wednesday blasted the president's statement as an example of obstruction of justice. The Times identified obstruction and Russian interference in the election as the two interview topics.

The New York Times reports Robert Mueller's Russian Federation team is scrutinizing the president's tweets, examining whether tweets plus private pressure on top justice officials like Attorney General Jeff Sessions equal obstruction of justice.

Sessions was an ardent Trump supporter and had met Russia's ambassador to the US Sergei Kislyak during Trump's campaign and later had to recuse himself from the Russian probe according to the US Department of Justice guidelines. That, like the prosecution of former national security adviser Michael T. Flynn for lying about phone calls with the Russians during the transition, has been something Trump has tried frantically to avoid.

The investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller is now examining the trial of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort on bank and tax fraud charges. "This is an attempt to obstruct justice hiding in plain sight. America must never accept it". For now, however, we know Trump was desperate to throw Mueller off the scent.

USA attorneys are prosecuting Manafort on charges of failing to pay taxes on millions he made from his work for a Russia-friendly Ukrainian political party and then lying to get loans when the cash stopped coming in.

Mueller is looking into the alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election and any potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow, among other matters that may arise from the investigation.

Trump has repeatedly belittled the probe as "a hoax", as those close to him suggest he feels that any talk of Russian interference tarnishes his electoral victory and delegitimizes his presidency.
