Leicester City refuted United's enquiry, with Maguire a genuine second choice; and Mourinho's frustration on the recent tour of the USA was visible to all to see.

Chris Smalling intends to be part of Manchester United's future despite seeing the club heavily linked with the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire and Yerry Mina.

The Belgian global is a better defender than anything the Red Devils have to offer at the minute.

However, this stalled Mina's move to the Old Trafford, and Everton were quick to swoop in as he's now on his way to the Goodison Park instead.

United are running out of time to add to their summer signings, with the transfer window closing on Thursday, a day before their Premier League campaign begins with a home match against Leicester.

Catalan daily Sports also reports that Mina would be signing a five-year deal with the Toffees, becoming the third signing of the summer under new manager Marco Silva.

As a result, United have opted to look elsewhere for a new signing with Mourinho seemingly desperate to strengthen the central defence before the transfer deadline.

Alderweireld, 29, has plied his professional trade in England since 2014 following a transfer from Atletico Madrid.
