Baby boy dies after being pulled from NY river

The baby was clad only in a diaper. "I called 911. At that point, I thought it was a doll". Officers saw the 8-month-old unconscious and unresponsive lying on the embankment on the edge of the East River near Dover Street and South Street under the Brooklyn Bridge.

A baby boy died after he was pulled from the water near the Brooklyn Bridge on Sunday afternoon, an NYPD spokesperson said.

"You could see its little legs just floating and his head was in the water", Diana Campbell told WPIX. "So I handed the phone to her and got the baby". "They kept asking if any parents were around but it was just the baby out there in the water, nobody around", said one witness at the scene.

Her husband Monte called emergency services before reaching into the water to retrieve the boy. The Times reported Campbell and police performed CPR on the baby under an ambulance arrived and took him to New York-Presbyterian Hospital on William Street in lower Manhattan where he was declared dead. The Medical Examiner is working to determine the baby's cause of death.

An officer climbed a safety railing and brought the boy onto a walkway, where police attempted CPR as they waited for EMS to respond to the scene. She said the baby was floating about 30 feet offshore.
