The reamins of Aretha Franklin arrive for her funeral service at the Greater Grace Temple on August 31, 2018 in Detroit, Michigan.

"I really believe that going to be an eye-opening experience for everybody in the world watching", said gospel artist Marvin Sapp, also among the scheduled performers. As they passed, they saw the singer's body dressed all in gold, with a long sequin gown and high heels to match her gleaming gold casket.

Sharpton recalled Franklin's activist side, noting she raised money for the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and created "the soundtrack of the civil rights movement".

The church's choir sang "Walk in the Light" as Ellis encouraged the congregation to sing along.

Over 40 musicians and celebrities gathered to celebrate Aretha Franklin on Thursday at "A People's Tribute to the Queen" at Chene Park Amphitheater, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Detroit's week of remembrances kicked off Monday with a gospel tribute that honored Franklin at New Bethel Baptist Church, the place that launched her legendary music career. Clive Davis, Smokey Robinson, Tyler Perry, Al Sharpton, Cicely Tyson, and Isaiah Thomas will speak, as well.

The funeral will start with music from the Aretha Franklin Orchestra, but also includes performances by Faith Hill, Ariana Grande, the Clark Sisters, Chaka Khan, Ron Isley, Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson, and Stevie Wonder.

White House lowers flag for McCain again after backlash
Our words are too often cheap and imminently forgettable but John McCain paid our freight with his body and with his soul. Earlier Monday, a statement written by McCain before his death read like a not-so-veiled criticism of the president.

The high-profile status of Aretha Franklin's funeral has been circling the press cycle since news first broke of her death.

People who lined up last night for an early spot in line found themselves pushed to the middle of the line after police forced the crowd to reorganize from a residential street.

A processional of Aretha Franklin's family and other loved ones is filling the aisles of the Greater Grace Temple on Friday morning in her hometown of Detroit.

"Aretha was my baby", Robinson said.

"Even though you knew over the last couple of months that she was sick and you knew this day was coming and you thought you would be prepared for it - but now that it's here it really is overwhelming", he said.

"We really haven't had much of an opportunity to have private moments", Owens said. "She was a full-service queen". The service is limited to family members, friends and selected guests.

Owens added, "It's going to be very hard after all this is over and people have all gone away".
