Tense count in Zimbabwe as some election observers voice concerns

Smaller wards in the urban areas are expected to be announced first while the rural votes make their way to the ZEC Centre at the Harare International Conference Centre.

Briefing the media in Harare this mid morning, ZEC Chairperson, Justice Priscilla Chigumba said the results will be announced as they come in, adding that they are confident that all the results will be announced earlier than the stipulated 5 days.

Dozens of Zimbabwean opposition supporters have gathered at their headquarters in the capital, celebrating in the belief that they have won the presidential election despite the lack of official results.

Zimbabwe's electoral commission says it expects to start announcing election results from 3 p.m. (1300GMT) on Tuesday.

If no presidential candidate wins more than 50 per cent of the vote, a runoff will be held September 8.

July's elections mark the first time the European Union and U.S. election monitors have been allowed into the country in years.

Meanwhile, a monitoring group, the Zimbabwe Election Support Network, issued preliminary findings on the vote, noting improvements such as a biometric registration system that reduced the chances of fraud.

Zimbabwe's main opposition is claiming that voting results forms were not posted at more than one-fifth of the country's polling stations as the law requires.

Polls have closed and counting is now underway in Zimbabwe following Monday's general elections.

The election is a two-horse race between 75-year-old Mnangagwa, a long-time Mugabe ally, and 40-year-old Nelson Chamisa, a lawyer and pastor who is vying to become Zimbabwe's youngest head of state.

Zimbabweans are awaiting the first results from an election that they hope will lift the country out of economic and political stagnation after decades of rule by former leader Robert Mugabe.
