Senator Mocks Trump Over North Korea Nuclear Program

In both of his Sunday appearances, Bolton also refused to answer questions about reports from NBC News and the Washington Post, in which anonymous USA intelligence officials say North Korea has been ramping up its production of nuclear fuel at multiple secret sites and coming up with ways to deceive the us about the scale of its nuclear weapons program.

Bolton said today the USA has a plan that would lead to the dismantling of North Korea's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs in a year.

Bolton told CBS's Face the Nation that Washington has devised a programme to dismantle North Korea's weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs in a year.

"If they have the strategic decision already made to do that and they are cooperative, we can move very quickly", Bolton said.

This also comes ahead of U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's scheduled visit to Pyongyang later this week.

The discussions will address Central Intelligence Agency reports that North Korea has increased its production of nuclear weapons fuel, according to a US Congressional source.

Samantha Vinograd, President Barack Obama's former Director for Iraq on the National Security Council warned that North Korea is deceiving President Donald Trump and he doesn't seem too anxious about it.

Bolton refused to comment on intelligence matters but the United States was going into nuclear negotiations aware of Pyongyang's failure to live up to its promises in the past.

"Work is ongoing to deceive us on the number of facilities, the number of weapons, the number of missiles", an official said. "And our concern about what they're doing in the 2018 election and what President Putin said through a translator of course but what he said was there was no meddling in 2016 by the Russian state". "We're well aware of what the North Koreans have done in the past".

On Friday, NBC News reported that United States intelligence officials believe the North had ramped up enrichment and is planning on keeping secret nuclear facilities hidden and operational.

US Defense Secretary James Mattis meanwhile has reassured key East Asian allies that the US commitment to Seoul is "ironclad" - despite Trump's unilateral suspension of military exercises with South Korea and his lauding of Kim as a "talented guy".

Despite Trump's rosy post-summit declaration that the North no longer poses a nuclear threat, Washington and Pyongyang have yet to negotiate the terms under which it would relinquish the weapons that it developed over decades to deter the U.S.
