The moon in the lunar eclipse will also be passing through the middle of the Earth's shadow, meaning it will spend the maximum time in darkness, thus contributing to the long duration of the eclipse.

Friday's total lunar eclipse will be visible across large parts across Africa, Australia, Asia, Europe, and South America.

The American space agency NASA says the moon will move into the Earth's shadow on Friday night.

According to some Hindu beliefs, celestial bodies such as the sun and moon emit negative energy during an eclipse and so some temples in India were closed to minimise any disturbance.

"During a very dark eclipse the moon may be nearly invisible".

He said the moon would begin to enter earth's shadow (known as the penumbra) around 5.15am and would gradually dim until about 6.25am.

Sometimes they are penumbral eclipses, where the moon passes through Earth's fainter outer shadow, which isn't quite visible to the human eye. While many in the world consider this just a scientific or astronomical celestial activity, however, in India, lunar eclipse has a significant importance in terms of believes and practices.

The next lunar eclipse visible in Brunei will take place on July 17 next year, but it will be a partial one.

As it rises, during this total eclipse, Earth's natural satellite will turn a striking shade of red or ruddy brown.

But the good news is we will get a great look at Mars, as the planet will be the closest it's been to Earth since 2003. You can view the "blood red" Moon from 1:15am to 2:43am. However, there still is a way using which it is possible to view the "blood moon" - live stream on YouTube.

In the United Kingdom, the Blood Moon will reach totality at 9.21pm BST.

"The moon was a lot paler pink than I expected - a handsome sight in the western sky".

According to scientists, the longest possible theoretical duration for totality during a lunar eclipse is 107 minutes.
