House Speaker Paul Ryan said Thursday he does not support an effort by a group of 11 conservative lawmakers to impeach Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, the official who oversees the special counsel's Trump-Russia investigation.

Meadows, chairman of the Freedom Caucus, tweeted that the Department of Justice has continued to hide information from Congress and repeatedly obstructed oversight. Rosenstein has said the documents contain personal data, information about intelligence sources and other sensitive information.

"It's time to find a new deputy attorney general who is serious about accountability and transparency", Meadows said.

Sessions, meanwhile, said in Boston on Thursday that Rosenstein is capable and that he enjoys Sessions' "highest confidence".

George Scott, Perry's opponent for the 10th district in November's election, released a statement today speaking highly of Rosenstein and criticizing his opponents decision.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions and House leaders rushed to the defense of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein Thursday, after a coalition of conservative lawmakers launched an impeachment effort against the Justice Department official. The impeachment articles are the result of almost nine months of unsuccessful congressional attempts to force the Department of Justice (DOJ) to comply with oversight requests.

"I hope that they lay down a gauntlet and show these folks that we're not just going to accept this", Rep. Tom Rice, R-S.C., told ABC News. Mark Meadows and Jim Jordan on Wednesday escalated their fight with the Justice Department, introducing a resolution to impeach Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

Not all Republicans are on board with the impeachment proceedings.

It is also expected to force key Republican leaders to choose sides after many of them have sought to distance themselves from the controversial President's moves to protect himself.

Democrats argue the move is little more than an attempt to damage the investigation into Trump's dealings.

"Impeachment is a punishment, it's not a remedy", House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Trey Gowdy said shortly before Meadows introduced the resolution.

Democrats have criticized Republican efforts to pressure the Justice Department in recent months, saying they are attempts to undermine Mueller's investigation.

Rosenstein is overseeing the Mueller investigation into any possible Russian collusion.

"The DOJ is keeping information from Congress", Jordan said. Meadows said after that meeting that there was still "frustration" with how the department has handled the oversight requests. He and other House and Senate Republicans say they see no enthusiasm for taking definitive action against the No. 2 official at the Justice Department - either now or nearer to the November election.

Meadows, Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan and the other Republicans who introduced the resolution have criticized Rosenstein and Justice Department officials as not being responsive enough as House committees have demanded documents related to the Russian Federation investigation's inception and a now-closed investigation into Democrat Hillary Clinton's emails.

Justice Department officials maintain that lawmakers have been provided with almost all the documents requested by the House Judiciary subpoena from March and that they have been trying to accommodate incoming requests from House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes.
