And while there were preliminary discussions as recently as 2012 about returning the Final Four to true basketball arenas, those talks appear to have been squashed altogether for the next decade or so, with the strength of the dollar winning out over the intimate feel of playing the game in a venue built for it.

Pushed to the finish line by the momentum it generated after hosting this year's Final Four, San Antonio is getting college basketball's signature event for a fifth time. The news comes as a major disappointment for local basketball enthusiasts, as the Final Four selection series were chosen for the years 2023-2026.

The University of Phoenix Stadium will host the Final Four in 2024, the NCAA announced on Monday.

"I could not be prouder that the NCAA has selected Phoenix to host another iconic Final Four", Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey said in a statement released by ASU.

The Final Four announcement came on Monday, live on the NCAA's Twitter page, less than two months after the National Football League awarded Super Bowl LVII to Arizona.

Carnes was surprised that the NCAA awarded the 2025 Final Four to the Alamo City. All those cities have hosted the event with overwhelming success in recent years, and yet all of them approached the bid process with an unassuming energy.

"I think one of things we said to the NCAA is that, "we know the transportation is an issue. We look forward to bringing the NCAA's marquee championship back to those locations".

Over the next four years, the event will be held in Minneapolis (2019), Atlanta (2020), Indianapolis (2021) and New Orleans (2022).

Plans already are underway by the city for additional improvements to the Alamodome before the next Final Four, Carnes said.

Johnson wasn't keen about harping on Phoenix's past mega-event history.

"Our communities came together", Johnson said. "But if I had to give my best guess, it was that we just showed them that we could do it".
