Nadal, the 2008 and 2010 champion, trails Djokovic, the 2011, 2014 and 2015 victor, 26-25 in a rivalry which began at Roland Garros 12 years ago.

Each player held his next serve before Anderson broke Isner again to go up 5-4 and then proceeded to serve out the set to send the match to a decisive fifth set.

In 2010, Isner famously won the longest tennis match of all time, beating France's Nicolas Mahut 70-68 in the final set in a contest that lasted 11 hours, 5 minutes, took three days to complete and featured 216 aces.

Meanwhile, Serena Williams will be back in the Wimbledon final on Saturday just 10 months after giving birth to her daughter and suffering life-threatening complications.

The clash surpassed the previous longest Wimbledon semi-final, between Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin del Potro in 2013, which lasted four hours and 44 minutes.

It became the second longest match in the history of the men's singles at Wimbledon when it passed five hours and 31 minutes.

Isner appeared to be struggling at times from 12-all to 18-all, but he held firm on his serve as Anderson, playing his second-consecutive five-set match, found a second (or third or fourth) wind.

The Centre Court roof remained closed, and the players carried on where they left off, raising the level of tennis seen at the championships so far by several notches.

However, he was unable to convert and Djokovic pounced to claim the set after nearly three hours on court.

Djokovic, the Wimbledon champion in 2011, 2014 and 2015, will be bidding for a 13th Grand Slam title when he faces Anderson on Sunday. Both men are in the semi-finals at Wimbledon for the first time.

Drop shots and volleys were the order of the game as Nadal claimed the set 6-3, with an ace, to force a fifth set.

The victor will face Kevin Anderson in Sunday's final. There was the deluge of aces (more than 100, in fact), the three tiebreakers, the final set that itself lasted almost three hours.

So there's not much better an authority to weigh in on whether it's time for fifth-set tiebreakers at all Grand Slam tournaments. "I'm not going to change that now", said the American.

When asked how he would recover and play in the final Sunday, Anderson said: "It's tough, I really don't know".

Kevin Anderson outslugged John Isner in a record match lasting more than six hours in Wimbledon's battle of the giants to reach his first men's final at the All England Club.

The 33-year-old agreed with Anderson that Wimbledon, the Australian Open and Roland Garros should fall in line with the US Open and introduce a tiebreak in the final set. I was for the roof because we started to play under it.

"If one person can't finish the other off before 12-All, then do a tiebreaker there".

"John is a great guy and I really feel for him".

Two hours and two sets in, they were even at one apiece, each via tiebreaker, with zero service breaks, only the very occasional extended point and aces by the dozen.

In a match between two of the game's biggest servers, Anderson started the match with a double-fault. You can't say playing a tie-break would not have been a magnificent end to this game.
