Earlier on Sunday, the Iranian leader had warned Trump to stop "playing with the lion's tail" and threatening Iran, "or else you will regret it".

Rouhani, of course, wasn't threatening to attack the United States but warning it against attacking Iran. "BE CAUTIOUS!" Trump wrote.

Later that day, Iran President Hassan Rouhani threatened the United States, saying "war with Iran is the mother of all wars".

"COLOR US UNIMPRESSED: The world heard even harsher bluster a few months ago".

As the August 6 deadline for the re-imposition of USA sanctions against Iran looms, its foreign ministry called on Europe on Tuesday to provide practical guarantees that will ensure Tehran's interests.

Iran on Monday dismissed Trump's angry warning that Tehran risked dire consequences "the like of which few throughout history have suffered before" if it made threats against the US.

Rouhani did not elaborate on how Iran would do so. Tehran has said its nuclear work is just for electricity generation and other peaceful projects. More sanctions, specifically targeting Iran's oil industry, will snap back in November.

But the Trump administration has been ramping up rhetoric about what it calls Iran's "malign" behavior in the region. They did so when Iran seized two USA navy riverine command boats in Iranian territorial waters in the Persian Gulf and its Revolutionary Guards arrested 10 US navy commandos. But always the two sides were careful to avoid serious conflict. He's trying to show Iranians that the Trump administration backs those opposing the Iranian leadership. "And Iranians have heard them - albeit more civilized ones - for 40 years", he said, adding that Iran "has been around for millennia" and has witnessed the fall of empires, including its own, "which lasted more than the life of some countries".
