Blood Moon 2018: How to view the total lunar eclipse in Australia

"The moon is always in ideal line with the Sun and the Earth, so we don't get a lunar Eclipse in every lunar cycle, said brad Tucker, an astronomer at the Research school of astronomy and astrophysics at the Australian national University".

According to the Astronomical Society of Southern Africa (ASSA), most of Africa, Europe, the Middle East and eastern Asia will see this eclipse. The entire event, from the moment Earth's shadow starts to fall upon the moon's edge to the time when the bright full moon emerges, will take nearly 4 hours.

Total lunar eclipses turn the moon red when the Earth passes between the Sun and the moon and casts a shadow on it.

The last time a total lunar eclipse lasted almost as long was on July 16, 2000, with a total duration of one hour and 46 minutes.

The most-awaited phase of the eclipse, the total lunar eclipse, is estimated to set in from 1 am IST on July 28.

Fans should be quick if they want to catch it, because it'll be your last chance to see one from the United Kingdom until January next year. From 21h30 until 23h13, it will be totally eclipsed, but faintly lit by light refracted by the Earth's atmosphere, which should give it a pale reddish colour.

He says "You know, God spoke to me and told me "go check out the Blood Moon" back in June".

Friday will bring the longest lunar eclipse of the 21st century.

This is the latest eclipse of the space-housed pair we call our own home (Earth) and our moon. This will persist until 2.43 am, after which the Moon will begin to move outside the Earth's shadow. This eclipse will also be the longest eclipse we have had this century!

The red moon is possible because while the moon is in total shadow, some light from the sun passes through Earth's atmosphere and is bent toward the moon. This phenomenon will also take place alongside the Blood Moon.

Finally, contrary to solar eclipses, lunar eclipses can be viewed without any eye protection.

Christian preachers John Hagee and Mark Blitz predicted that a tetrad - that's four lunar eclipses in a row - would hail the end of the world. A lunar eclipse can occur only when the moon is full.

Mars will actually be at its closest approach since 2003 on July 30 and 31, at 35.78 million miles away.

Sadly, North Americans will miss out entirely.
