Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer escalated on Friday the ongoing partisan fight over documents related to Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh's career, sending a letter to President George W. Bush asking him to authorize and make public the release of all documents related to Kavanaugh's time in the Bush White House - including in the position of staff secretary.

The Manchin meeting could set the stage for other swing-vote Democrats to talk with Kavanaugh or even support him, despite fierce pressure from party leaders and activists.

Manchin previously said he wants to meet Kavanaugh before his Senate Judiciary Committee hearing as well as afterward. With Senate control slimly held by Republicans 51-49, Democrats can't block Kavanaugh's nomination outright if Republicans hold together.

Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, the Republican who holds West Virginia's other U.S. Senate seat, wrote an op-ed in The Journal, a newspaper in Martinsburg, urging senators to give Judge Kavanaugh a fair shake.
