Trump had once courted Heitkamp, even inviting her to NY to discuss a Cabinet post soon after his 2016 election victory.

The president, however, noted Heitkamp's votes against tax cuts he signed into law in December as well as the GOP's long-sought goal to undo the health care program enacted by President Barack Obama.

He says so many things go into the making of a great Supreme Court justice.

"With Washington so divided, Heidi is a rare senator who doesn't get bogged down by partisan politics - she knows both sides of the aisle have good ideas", Libby Schneider, Heitkamp's campaign manager wrote in a statement accompanying the ad, "Heidi brings small-town North Dakota common sense to the Senate, and that's why she's been successful getting real results for the folks she serves".

"You need a senator who doesn't just talk like they're from North Dakota, but votes like they're from North Dakota", Trump told the audience.

But Trump's message was clear: North Dakota needs to send Cramer to the Senate because he will vote with the president all the time.

The stakes are high for North Dakota's race.

But on Wednesday, the president accused Heitkamp of voting lockstep with Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer. "I said I'm not anxious about what's happened in the past, I just want to talk about what we're going to do moving forward", Cramer said.
