Trump Signals Support for Legislation Easing US Ban on Marijuana

The legislation would ensure states have the right to determine the best approach to marijuana within their borders, but some USA restrictions would remain, including recreational sales to people under 21.

Canada's Senate passed a bill Thursday legalizing recreational marijuana, moving it closer to becoming the first member of the Group of Seven nations to legalize the production, sale and consumption of the drug. Cory Gardner (R-CO), The Strengthening the Tenth Amendment Entrusting States, or STATES Act, would protect businesses in states with legalized marijuana from federal government interference and prosecution from the Department of Justice.

But many marijuana rights' activists praised the STATES Act for its social justice components. But, he said, "We view its structure and substance as a clear signal that the broader policy trajectory is bending towards a clarification of federal cannabis policy". "I think in the previous conversation we had he talked about the need to solve this conflict between state and federal law", Gardner says.

On Friday, Trump was speaking to the media as he left the White House for a world leaders' summit in Canada when a reporter shouted the question: "Do you support Senator Gardner's marijuana federalism bill?"

Nobody has been working longer to have a US president say what Trump did this morning than the folks at NORML.

"There are huge public safety implications to an all-cash industry", Allen said. He welcomed the president's "continued interest in an approach that respects the will of the voters in each state". I would defer to Canadian advocates on the ground, but I hope that the Senate gets forced to vote again on the Cannabis Act as amendments that outlaw branding and could prohibit home cultivation are stripped from the law.

"Imagine, for example, that a supplier is licensed by her state to cultivate 1,000 plants, but she actually keeps 1,001 plants in her warehouse".

"There are federal laws that say if the source of the money is illegal, which would be under federal law, they can't put the money in a bank". Some banks have been wary to offer services due to the federal prohibition.

Trump's comments Friday build on an earlier discussion he had with Gardner on marijuana. While support for legalizing cannabis was largely split along party lines, with Justin Trudeau's Liberal Party including legalization as party priority, interestingly, two Conservatives abstained as they have their own financial interests in the cannabis industry.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY introduced a bill on the marijuana holiday 4/20 - a reference to the police code for pot use, which is "420" - that would remove marijuana entirely from the list of Schedule One drugs that legally classifies marijuana as risky as heroin, LSD and ecstasy. Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat. "I know exactly what he's doing, we're looking at it".
