Trump says he has 'absolute' power to pardon himself

US President Donald Trump claims he has the authority to pardon himself if special counsel Robert Mueller finds that he has illegally colluded with Russian Federation to interfere with the democratic process.

After the briefing, Trump's attorney Jay Sekulow said Monday he stands by the assertion in the legal team's letter to the special counsel claiming the President "dictated" the Trump Jr. statement.

Giuliani's remarks followed reports that the president's legal team sent a letter to special counsel Robert Mueller in late January outlining a legal justification that as president, Trump can not be held accountable for obstruction of justice and should not be interviewed by investigators.

A 20-page January letter from Trump's lawyers to Mueller that leaked to the media over the weekend argued that the White House has answered all of Mueller's questions and requests, and so he can not legally force the president to answer questions.

'In no case can he be subpoenaed or indicted, ' Guiliani told HuffPost.

"I think the political ramifications would be tough", Giuliani told ABC's "This Week".

He made it clear Trump's legal team would combat any effort to force the president to testify in front of a grand jury.

The questions followed a newly revealed January letter from Trump's legal team to Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Counselor Kellyanne Conway said on "Fox & Friends" that the question of whether Trump may pardon himself is "ridiculous" because "you would pardon yourself if you've done something wrong".

Trump has also denied any collusion with the Kremlin and has called Mueller's investigation a witch hunt. While Trump did have the authority to fire former FBI Director James Comey, the question becomes whether he had corrupt intent in doing so - the issue at the center of Mueller's obstruction investigation.

"The president is not saying he is going to pardon himself".

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, took to Twitter today to launch a series of verbal attacks on the Democratic Party, the Clinton foundation, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Special Counsel.

"Once again, I can't comment on a letter from the President's outside counsel", she said.

In that memo, Mr Trump's lawyers argued the President could not have obstructed the investigation because, as the nation's chief law enforcement officer, he already has the power to terminate it.

"Thankfully the president hasn't done anything wrong and therefore wouldn't need one", she said. "He has no intention of pardoning himself", said Giuliani. "I don't know how you can indict while he's in office, no matter what it is", Giuliani told HuffPo.

Shortly after, the White House echoed that sentiment with an email to reporters titled: "President Donald J. Trump's 500 Days of American Greatness".
