Trump considering commuting Rod Blagojevich’s sentence

The wife of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich made an emotional appeal to President Donald Trump to help her husband on Thursday, saying in an interview on Fox News that the President is "compassionate" and "knows how important it is that my husband gets home to be a father to our daughters".

What do those three people have in common?

Preet Bharara, the Indian American US attorney for the Southern District of NY was one of the led prosecutors in that case.

D'Souza was sentenced to five years of probation for violating federal campaign law. The prosecutor in the case was James Comey, who later became Federal Bureau of Investigation director and was sacked by Trump.

The US leader later said he was also considering commuting the sentence of Rod Blagojevich, a former IL governor jailed for corruption, and Stewart, the celebrity chef jailed for five months in 2004-05 for making false statements in an insider trading case.

Martha Stewart was prosecuted by Comey when he was USA attorney attorney for the Southern District of NY.

Stewart, meanwhile, was convicted in 2004 of obstructing justice and lying to the government about why she unloaded stock just before the price plummeted. Fitzgerald, in yet another twist, was appointed as special prosecutor by none other than James Comey. In addition to D'Souza and Johnson, Trump has pardoned former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio, a top Trump supporter during the 2016 campaign.

"He's being fearless and courageous", he said, referring to the D'Souza pardon. "The career prosecutors and agents did their job", he said.

Blagojevich was impeached as governor of Illinois in 2009 and sentenced in December 2011 to 14 years in prison for corruption including trying to sell the Illinois Senate seat vacated by Barack Obama.

D'Souza's pardon is also possibly the first for Indian Americans, a tiny but prosperous community of 4 million that has been called a model minority for staying on the right side of law, among other things. "He was treated very unfairly by our government!" the president tweeted Thursday morning.

D'Souza said his prosecution was politically motivated, in part because he had made a film highly critical of President Obama.

D'Souza also fits that approach, Wright said.

This is Mr. Trump's fifth pardon since taking office.

The move makes it ever clearer that, in the Trump administration, the odds of a pardon are better for those with a celebrity backer, those who have become a cause celebre among conservatives and those with a reality TV connection. The students had lost 17 classmates and teachers in a shooting that month. And he said that I got to tell you man-to-man have you been screwed. In another tweet, he wrote "Adults 1, kids 0".

D'Souza never received any jail time. Scott, who is running for U.S. Senate, has not yet said if he will attend.
