And Nintendo has announced that its free-to-play version of the game was downloaded more than two million times in the 24 hours after its release on the Switch on Tuesday.

Later in the week, Sony got into hot water when numerous the 2+ million people who downloaded "Fortnite" for the Nintendo Switch in its first 24 hours of availability found they couldn't play on both a PlayStation 4 and the Switch, and would have to choose one or the other - at least, if they wanted to keep their purchased items.

The block means that players can carry over their progress, purchases, and skins from Fortnite on PlayStation 4 to the Nintendo Switch or Xbox One.

The company went on to tout its 79 million consoles sold worldwide and said that it has a "huge community of gamers who can play together on Fortnite and all online titles". However, you can only play on the PS4 if you started there - Sony doesn't let the data out to other platforms.

It's especially odd, seeing as much of Fortnite's success can be owed to the game being made available on PlayStation 4 in the first place.

These links leave Siliconera. That isn't the case here, though, because you can play Fortnite with people on PS4, PC, iOS, and Android devices.

The release of Fortnite on Nintendo Switch was inevitable but still a very welcome bit of E3 news - especially with the whole "it's out now" angle. Neither the Fortnite website nor Epic Customer Service are able to change this. Reggie Fils-Aime did preface his statement to IGN saying that Sony's decisions are theirs to make, and that they will respect how they choose to please their players.

On Switch - "This Fortnite account is associated with a platform which does not allow it to operate on Switch".

Sony Interactive Entertainment issued a statement to the BBC today that doesn't deal directly with the core issue that players are taking issue with. It looks more like the iPhone version of the game than the one you can play on consoles and computers. They are even angrier that Sony never warned them that they could be locked out of playing on the Switch. That's unfortunate for anyone who wanted to play Fortnite with their friends regardless of what console they own.
