Porsche is still gradually marketing its Mission E electric vehicle a full year ahead of going into production.

Porsche has also shown a Mission E Cross Turismo concept, a wagon version of the electric auto.

"We intend to redefine the high performance e-vehicle segment (with the Taycan)", Zellmer said. The name "Taycan", Porsche says, translates to "lively young horse". So now you know.

The 2020 Porsche Taycan (pronounced "tie-con") takes its name from the horse on the Porsche crest, according to the automaker, which itself was taken from the Stuttgart coat of arms. With this setup, Porsche claims that the Taycan will complete a 0-100 km/h sprint in 3.5 seconds and take just under 12 seconds for a 0-200 km/h speed run. Porsche claims this powertrain will allow the Taycan production auto to cover 0-62mph in under 3.5 seconds and 0-124mph in under 12s before hitting a top speed of 155mph. In that regard, the Taycan truly delivers as it will boast a range of 310 miles on a single charge.

And here we thought Porsche was slowly reverting to using numbers instead of those controversial names; when the current Boxster and Cayman were launched, Porsche added the 718 moniker. The Porsche Taycan will also offer a consistent level of power that is unprecedented among electric vehicles: multiple launches in a row will be possible without a loss in performance, and the vehicle's maximum range will be over 300 miles as measured in accordance with the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).

Porsche has confirmed that the Mission E concept, in its production ready avatar, will be christened Taycan. Porsche Chair Oliver Blume called it "strong and dependable; it's a vehicle that can consistently cover long distances and that epitomizes freedom".

Porsche's original goal had been to spend three billion euro ($3.53bn) on electromobility by 2022.

The Taycan is expected to arrive in 2019 and start around $75,000. Around 500 million euro is going to go on Taycan variants and derivatives, it says, while around a billion euro will got on electrification and hybridization of the existing Porsche line-up. It will have two highly capable electric motors, one powering the rear axle and the other the front axle.
