This year's theme: "Tobacco and heart disease", focuses on tobacco use as a key risk factor for developing heart and related diseases, including stroke.

Officials with Alberta Health Services marked World No Tobacco Day on Thursday by highlighting the many programs and services in place to help people quit smoking and all forms of tobacco.

The report said in China, more than six out of 10 people were unaware that smoking could cause a heart attack while in India and Indonesia, more than half of all adults did not know that the habit could lead to a stroke.

The Youth Action on Tobacco Control and Health says tobacco smoking has been linked to 15 different kinds of known cancers.

Around 41% of smokers who tried to quit said they would need assistance to do so while 25% were using e-cigarette or vaping devices. In the Region of the Americas the prevalence for males in 2000 was 33.4% compared to 22% in 2015, and, among females, 22.6% in 2000 compared to 12.9% in 2015.

At the same time, smoking unleashes poisonous gases like carbon monoxide, which replaces oxygen in the blood, thereby reducing the availability of oxygen for the heart muscle, World Health Organization said. And it is the people of these countries that are the targets of intensive tobacco industry marketing. More than 600,000 nonsmokers are dying each year from secondhand smoke wordwide and 1/3rd of them are children, he said. Tobacco use damages nearly every organ in the body.

A country-by-country analysis warns that "the smoking epidemic is being exported from the rich world to low-income and middle-income countries".

Tobacco smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals, including tar and others that can narrow arteries and damage blood vessels, and nicotine, which is associated with increases in heart rate and blood pressure.

Quitting the habit is made more hard by the physical addiction to nicotine - the chemical stimulant in tobacco.

As per GATS-2 2016-17, in India consumption of smokeless tobacco is far more than smoked tobacco.

"In this regard and in conjunction with World No Tobacco Day, let us try to make Brunei Darussalam free of cigarette smoke". As per data, 19 per cent of men, 2 per cent of women and 10.7 per cent of all adults now smoke tobacco, while 29.6 per cent of men, 12.8 per cent of women and 21.4 per cent of all adults now use smokeless tobacco.

But as the video proceeds, it beats quicker and more smoke can be seen puffing from its valves - created to mimic being overworked.

In Maharashtra, as per GATS-2, 35.5 per cent of men, 17 per cent of women and 26.6 per cent of all adults now either smoke and or use smokeless tobacco.

Tobacco use is a major cause of non-communicable disease, not only in Myanmar but also worldwide. Given the large burden of such diseases in India, the impact is huge.
